How TALI is governed.
TALI is an academic unit of Southshore university College, governed under the University Statutes and reporting to the Academic Board through the Pro President (Academic).
Dean of the Graduate School
The Dean is the principal academic and administrative officer of TALI. The Dean is appointed by the Governing Council, on the recommendation of the President, from among the senior professorial members of the University College, for a renewable term of four years. The Dean chairs the Board of Graduate Studies and the Doctoral Committee, represents TALI on the Academic Board, and is responsible for the academic standard of every postgraduate award conferred by the University College.
Board of Graduate Studies
The Board is the principal decision-making body of TALI. It is constituted as follows:
- The Dean of the Graduate School (Chair)
- The Heads of contributing Schools, ex officio
- Two senior professorial members, appointed by the Academic Board
- The University Librarian, ex officio
- The Registrar, ex officio
- Two postgraduate student representatives (one taught, one research)
The Board meets at least once each semester and is responsible for approving new programmes, regulations, examination outcomes and graduation lists.
Doctoral Committee
A sub-committee of the Board, the Doctoral Committee reviews every doctoral admission, confirmation of registration, change of supervisor, transfer between programmes and viva outcome. It is chaired by the Dean and includes the convenors of each research theme.
Graduate Studies Office
The Graduate Studies Office, headed by a Graduate Studies Coordinator, provides the day-to-day administration of TALI — admissions intake, candidate records, examination logistics, supervision agreements and graduation. The Office is the first point of contact for prospective and current postgraduate students.
Relationship with contributing Schools
Each postgraduate programme is owned academically by a contributing School. The School provides the supervisors, sets the discipline-specific curriculum and recommends examiners. TALI sets the regulations, coordinates admission and examination, monitors quality and confers the award.
Quality assurance
All TALI programmes are reviewed on a five-year cycle in line with the University’s quality-assurance framework and the requirements of the relevant national regulator. External examiners’ reports are tabled at the Board and acted upon within one academic year.
